Sunnyside is a business revitalization zone with a redevelopment plan in place. It is one of Calgary’s oldest areas settled by Homesteaders in the 1800’s incorporated in 1904 into the city proper. Original residents of CPR and Eau Claire Sawmill employees lived there. Now it attracts urban professionals and their families due to its quietness and proximity to downtown.
Sunnyside does have to deal with flood issues from the Bow River at times when weather fronts are difficult and mountain run off is high.Architecture is a mixed array of designs and styles. It is a blend of single family, low rise and walkup apartment buildings. Still many of the CPR’s worker’s cottages remain. Most of them have been updated somewhat. They all sit on 25′ lots. They are wood framed with cellars probed to flooding.
The population is approximately 4000 people with 2500 dwellings. It is primarily residential.
